Come Drink with Me Regissert av King Hu
The opening, an ambush on a palanquin and its guards crossing a harsh, hilly landscape by a band of brigands, was athletic, visceral, and gory in a way that audiences hadn’t seen before, and they responded with mad enthusiasm… It’s no exaggeration to say that Come Drink with Me was to the wuxia what The Wild Bunch (1969) was to the Western.

This is all the start of a tightly plotted, fast-paced adventure that unfurls across open plains and dense monastic gardens, with ample screen time allotted to the elegant swordplay that is such a staple of the genre. COME DRINK WITH ME is pulse-quickening, ambitious and a little bit zany, traits Hu would continue exploring to even greater acclaim with DRAGON GATE INN and A TOUCH OF ZEN, though the thrills and pleasures of his breakout film are so simple that it rightly remains a favorite.

Cheng Pei-Pei had a background in professional dance, not martial arts, and her movements suggest grace more than strength, which not only gives her character a cool, unflappable reserve, but helps transform Come Drink With Me into something that looks as much like a musical as it does a kung-fu movie. At times, it even breaks out into song. And there’s magic, too, in the quiet rapport between Golden Swallow and Drunken Cat, who become partners with few words exchanged and Astaire-Rogers timing.
