I completely forgot I had watched this film a while back. I was sold on it by countless different people. The usual pitch was given. Then I watched it and... bleh. One of the biggest cinematic disappointments of my life. I found it extremely hard to connect to bother the story line and the characters. I wanted to give up at least 10 times. Maybe it just wasn’t for me.
The age-old complaint of glamourising wrong-doing applies in spades to this amoral paean to an unappealing milieu. Without unduly singling this film out, it’s endemic of film-making that wallows in hedonism, venality and illegality. You could say The Godfather covers some of those vices, but that example was structurally, texturally and tonally finessed when compared to the jibby swagger of these thin pretenders.
9/10 One of the best gangster flicks out there. A great British cast, neat script and a lot of energy. Of course highly influenced ny Ritchie stuff, but Vaughn out played his teacher. Film is much more darker and clever. It's all about people, not about crime itself. Craig is incredible in an uncommon role for him (I wish he could do more like this one). And yes, Sienna Miller is hot as hell!
Layer Cake, a metaphor of mobster hierarchy & difficulties to go through the layers to the top of the cake. Once you are in this 'business', you can't simply stop & retire. This is British Cinema at it's best; fun/persiflage, intelligence & tense. Brilliant actings of all cast, good script & directing. "The meekest man can't remain at peace, if that displeases the quarrelsome neighbour." (F. Schiller/Wilhelm Tell).
Craig in pre-Bond years. Those out-of-this-world perfect-blue-sky blue eyes of his. The film's sick editing and its neat score. Hard drugs to be catered in malls in the near future is a very 'thinking outside the box' idea/concept. The sniper sniping the sniper+blood on leaves (did you watch this before doing Django, Tarantino?)He really thought he could out-live them but they pulled him "back in"> no escape, son!
This is a good Youtube movie. There are some great bits of dialogue and narration that draw you in but the movie as a whole was not worth the time. Just watch the important clips on Youtube. I didn't read the book but my suspicion is that it is better than the movie. Not worth the 105 minutes.
