De Duits-Joodse Nelly overleefde Auschwitz maar moest een reconstructieve gezichtsoperatie ondergaan. Zonder Nelly te herkennen, vraagt haar ex-echtgenoot haar om hem te helpen de erfenis van zijn vrouw op te eisen. Om te zien of hij haar bedrogen heeft, stemt ze toe en wordt ze haar dubbelganger.

Collaborating once more with Harun Farocki and lead actor Nina Hoss, Christian Petzold (Barbara) carefully crafts this cleverly plotted, smotheringly suspenseful post-WW2 drama. An especially impressive combination of throwback thriller and genre elements with substantial thematic weight.
