When I assert that Joe Dante's two MASTER'S OF HORROR outings are masterpieces, I do so only insofar as I see myself addressing television works rather than truncated feature films. THE SCREWFLY SOLUTION cannot be understood as a masterpiece independent of its being television. I have always thought of Joe Dante as pop culture's most kindly subversive, but w/ this one he's basically napalming Mainstreet America.
The Screwfly Solution as it exists as a short story is very fascinating, both for its stark & disturbing content and the fact that it was written under the male nom de plume of writer Alice Sheldon in the 70's. Dante keeps the specifics intact, but adds contemporary detail to sharpen his sociopolitical critiques. You can only imagine how good it could be developed as a film.
