“We started to work on [The Garden of Allah]; I went back to the studio that night, I called up Mr. Mannix and said, 'Eddie, I'm not so sure I'm the man for this picture.' He said, 'Why? I said, 'It's in color! I don't know anything about color...I'm not the man.' He said, 'Oh, forget about it...you're the man. Mr. Selznick wants you to do it, and we want you to do it.' So I went back the next day, photographed it, and won the Academy Award that year for color.”
