MUBI Ethical Funding and Investment Policy

Publication date: 15 August 2025

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to formalize and clarify MUBI’s principles for fundraising and investment decisions and uphold basic ethical standards while supporting our mission.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all decisions, made by or on behalf of MUBI, Inc. (“MUBI”), relating to fundraising and investments from the date it is signed.

3. Ethical Fundraising and Investment Principles

3.1 Guiding principles

Our approach to funding is guided by the values we have upheld since our founding: respect for human dignity, support for creative freedom, and a belief in the power of cinema to connect people across cultures. We recognise that the global investment landscape is complex and that capital often flows through intermediaries and diversified portfolios. While we cannot eliminate every indirect link to controversial sectors or actors, we will make reasonable efforts to avoid funding relationships that fundamentally contradict these principles.

3.2 Risk-based application and governance

Reviews are conducted case by case and proportionately, taking into account the nature of the counterparty’s activities, the degree of MUBI’s control or influence in the transaction, the reliability of source information, any remediation taken by the counterparty, and the feasibility of alternatives. Significant decisions may be escalated to the MUBI Board of Directors for review. For diversified funds or broadly diversified institutions, MUBI does not undertake to map all underlying holdings except where required by law or where specific risks are identified.

3.3 Exclusionary screening

MUBI’s Management will review fundraising and investment decisions and seek to avoid transactions that are not expected to align with these standards. Indicators may include credible and direct evidence that a counterparty:

  • is identified by credible sources (including international courts with relevant jurisdiction and UN bodies) as being, or having been, involved in grave violations of international law, racism, or racial violence;
  • has a persistent and material record of human rights abuses or complicit behaviour;
  • engages in exploitative labour practices, including child labour or unsafe working conditions.
These indicators are evaluated in context, including the recency and severity of issues, documented remediation, and MUBI’s degree of control or influence in the relationship.

3.4 Positive screening

Where feasible, MUBI will give preference to partners that demonstrate commitment to:

  • universal principles of human rights and international law;
  • refraining from doing or contributing to undue harm;
  • maintaining basic ethical standards;
  • inclusive and fair labour practices;
  • anti-corruption and anti-bribery measures;
  • global social justice and equity.

4. Review and amendment

This policy will be reviewed at least annually, or more frequently if required due to changes in legislation or organisational priorities.
