“I think there is a tendency that Japanese people generally don't watch Japanese film, even though there are many Japanese films made. I didn't want to specifically erase the Japanese elements from the film, but I wanted to lose the flavour of Japanese film, so to speak. The very uninteresting, flat images, the stereotypical acting - those things we see too often in Japanese film, so this I wanted to avoid.”
