BLISS: EM BUSCA DA FELICIDADE

Mike Cahill Estados Unidos, 2021
"Bliss" is, both literally and figuratively, a cluttered film, from its debris-strewn streets to its often murky plotting... Expect head-scratching, some non-sequiturs and lots of quirks and Bliss will mostly entertain and consistently baffle.

“Bliss” is far more kooky and tedious than it is good, and it's so confusing that even the movie's sense of humor is a question mark. At least we have the chemistry between Wilson and Hayek, who can render Cahill's more baffling ideas of romance... as movie-star indulgence instead of plainly odd... "Bliss" simply does not bring everything together, or achieve its desired high-concept grandiosity.

[Cahill] flounders with creating a sensory experience to match the story’s cerebral ideas... There may be a way to justify the shoddiness of the movie’s images with a high-concept explanation — maybe it’s intentional that no matter what reality Greg and Isabel occupy, it looks grubby, flimsy and fake. But “Bliss” fails to engage the senses, resulting in cinematic disappointment.

Convoluted doesn’t begin to describe the sci-fi drama “Bliss,” which starts off intriguingly enough but loses its way once it attempts to explain itself, before surprising us entirely in the end — and not in a particularly satisfying way... [Cahill] takes earnest stabs at big ideas and themes, including the concept of “bliss,” but never clearly or cogently enough to draw us in on an emotional or intellectual level.

The films all take a quiet, low-fi approach to sci-fi, with an emphasis on ideas rather than on fighting, on emotions over visual effects. That’s a rarity, and, despite its occasional awkwardness, “Bliss” is still worth getting lost in.

“Bliss” contains none of the sparks — emotional or intellectual — that made Cahill’s previous features, if not successful, at least interesting to watch... Greg and his eventual partner in exploration, Isabel (Salma Hayek, also miscast), are neither good nor curious. Worse, the concepts they explore are often both silly and insulting.

A strikingly impressive visual feast.

Too soon, Cahill’s story ambitions start little intramural fights with one another, and the pacing and tone become fuzzy. The movie’s fantasy/reality gamesmanship is on the plodding side; that’s the wrong side if your goal is to disorient your audience, while keeping that audience off-balance but hooked.

There is some epically bad acting in this silly and tiresome sci-fi fantasy-mystery... a conceited mess... [wherein] every syllable of action, as we grind towards the broadly guessable finish, is jeopardy-free and interest-free.

Cahill’s latest film is an exercise in existential inquiry... the question of the film is about how we define happiness and misery, and how our perception of one can define the other... It’s an interesting question, the mere asking of which elevates what is otherwise already a cliche.

["Bliss"] does sustain a free-floating tension similar to what Cahill summoned for his low-tech indie sci-fi movies "Another Earth" and "I Origins;" here, working with bigger name actors and what looks like a bigger budget, he’s made a conceptual puzzler that’s compelling in its broad strokes and sketchy in its details—the opposite of some of his past efforts.

"Bliss" boasts admirable technical elements, including well-conceived production design and cinematography that expertly delineate the two very different worlds the main characters inhabit. But for all the film's imagination, it's hard not to think that we've been down this Matrix-like road before. You find yourself wondering why Greg doesn't simply take the red pill.
