At times, Bottoms plays right into the same problematic dynamics it’s making fun of, and it occasionally veers into weird tonal shifts. For the most part, though, Bottoms strikes a balance: It’s a playful satire, and it’s also exactly the sort of film it’s making fun of.

“Bottoms” [is] eminently watchable, even captivating, because the production as a whole outruns the deficiencies of the writing and direction. The true hero of the movie is the casting director, Maribeth Fox, because she provides Seligman with a generation-defining set of new stars.

Co-written by Seligman and Sennott, “Bottoms” is fun and silly in all its chaos. The two have created a ridiculous world where the overdramatic high school drama is not always supposed to make sense, but that’s part of the appeal.

Ultimately, it’s the go-for-broke energy that Seligman and her cast inject into Bottoms that makes it so infectious. Wisely, the actors play things straight even when things are at their most outlandish.
