There are many things that slightly miss the mark here, from the underwritten huh-who-what-why characters to the under-explained specifics of the world around them, but nothing is quite as jarringly off target as the visualised streams of consciousness, confusing throughout, ugly at times and when a crowd of men are thinking at once, extremely annoying.

A disappointment. A premise with much promise has been turned into a bland retread through YA’s most familiar faults — despite some bold efforts from Holland, Ridley and Mikkelsen.

An overcooked 22-pound cinematic turkey, a genuine schlockbuster, a cosmic flop... Chaos Walking doesn’t even get to the level of high camp, where pleasure is found in the sheer badness of it all.

One does get the sense that maybe, in some distant rough cut or interim screenplay draft, ["Chaos Walking"] was a much funnier, more engaging picture. Instead, what we now have is a movie that seems determined to run away from itself.

As it stands... "Chaos Walking" is, as with any pop confection, catchy and has a solid beat, it’s just a shame that this tune is all too familiar.

"Chaos Walking" feels like a condensement of Ness’ trilogy of books instead of a straightforward translation of the first, and consequently there’s too much that needs to happen in too slim a running time, which leaves little space for making the movie’s conflicts matter... It is just another YA property flattened into a broadly drawn story of coming-of-age strife.

"Chaos Walking" immerses the viewer in a different kind of cinematic headspace, creating a film that gradually teaches the viewer how to watch it... But once you're immersed, it's a powerful experience that lingers in the mind long after the film's many disappointments have started to fade.

Some quintessential spark is missing. The characters are uninvolving, the emotional stakes never fully take hold and the physical action invariably promises more than it delivers... Maybe genre fans starved for large-scale sci-fi will find some appeal in the joyless journey. I couldn't get past the tiresome premise of men quite literally airing their insecurities.

Too frequently and too loudly, the sci-fi bells and whistles of “Chaos Walking” overwhelm its quieter, more engrossing elements, making it hard to hear what the film really seems to be saying.

"Chaos Walking" doesn’t have much in the way of surprises or excitement... What it does have is an ingenious sci-fi hook, a conceit of great narrative and thematic utility... Miss those themes announced like thoughts put into words, and there’s still the way Liman and his writers play their Philip K. Dick-worthy concept for screwball comedy and suspense.

"Chaos Walking" can’t help but feel painfully passé. Ridley and Holland have a sweet rapport, but they’re trapped in a picture that’s chasing a faded cinematic trend that hasn’t been a thought in most viewers’ minds for a long time.

["Chaos Walking"] captures that feeling of sensory overwhelm but it likewise shuts out one’s abilities to process other things. And while Liman and visual effects supervisor Matt Johnson found a suitably cinematic way to put it onscreen, the cacophony of voices has a detrimental effect on the rushed storytelling, particularly in the way it undermines character and diminishes subtext.
