Esmail goes big and bold with his Hitchcock allusions and showy camera work, not unlike M Night Shyamalan. At times, he’s a little on the nose, also not unlike M Night Shyamalan. It suits his vision, which is by no means another “eat the rich” story but does watch these events unfold with a sense of wry hubris.

Each of the relationships between the film’s four leads has its own juicily compelling dynamic, playing on broader American social tensions around race, wealth, sex and so forth without ever being so gauche as to turn any of it into a teachable moment.

Esmail’s film is constantly deflating the tension and mystery that it builds up... In the end, Leave the World Behind is content to blandly shrug in the direction of an amorphous calamity, reaching for a profundity that it fails to achieve.

Edgy, unsettlingly paranoid and genuinely clever, [Leave the World Behind] is a logical continuation of the conversation writer-director Sam Esmail started with “Mr. Robot.”

The characters’ behavior doesn’t entirely make sense, and not even this talented cast can make them breathe, especially with such a clunky, overly expository script. Who are these people? Do we care? Should we care? Does the film?

“Leave The World Behind” isn’t as perfect as its best-written moments... . But as a wicked, playful, tension-filled, and alarming treatise on humanity, its deep flaws, and how fragile, questionable, scattered, and thus vulnerable we are to attack? Oh boy, the worst apocalypse one can imagine is of our own making.

Though the main cast are accomplished, beautiful and intermittently interesting, they feel out of place in a movie that ought to have been a lot more scary, or a lot more subdued. Here, they feel stranded.

Leave The World Behind feels like a bad concatenation of Shyamalan’s last two features processed through ChatGPT... A starry trio and suspenseful filmmaking can’t save this apocalyptic thriller from collapsing on itself.

The seeds of our destruction have already been planted by us; they simply need a little water and and sunlight to grow. And the more that Leave the World Behind pokes at that notion, the more you fear that this isn’t a thriller. It could be a documentary with movie stars.
