MISTÉRIOS DA CARNE

Gregg Araki Estados Unidos, 2004
Araki makes everything deceptively enjoyable to watch, especially because his repeatedly manifested desire to live in a world eternally soundtracked by shoegaze is expanded here by Robin Guthrie/Harold Budd’s pretty lovely score.

A film depicting child molestation should provoke disgust and does induce grimaces of discomfort, but it also explores the topic with not only technical brilliance, but emotional satisfaction. Araki fosters the on screen relationships of these broken teens with the utmost care, making sure to humanize them.

Pop iconography typically signifies the alienation of Araki’s characters from the world, but in Mysterious Skin it ushers in their salvation. For Araki, then, Mysterious Skin spells progress.

For a movie premised on sexual trauma, Mysterious Skin is often disconcertingly sexy—and its eroticism has a surprisingly bracing effect.

Though it deals with gay issues and characters, this isn't strictly a gay film, and will only be termed so by dint of its graphic scenes of male nudity and eye-poppingly uncomfortable twist. Broad-minded audiences will find plenty to admire in the cast. Corbet emerges as an actor of sensitivity and depth, but it's Gordon-Levitt who steals every scene.

[Araki's] most mature and penetrating drama to date... Mysterious Skin [tells] a story that is psychologically rich, emotionally haunting, and technically superior to anything he has ever done. And although the film’s subject matter is disturbing and its outlook bleak, Mysterious Skin is not without hope and possibility.

"Mysterious Skin" might be the most unflinching depiction of how sexual predation reverberates over time, like toxic ripples through a pond... [Araki] has made the most mature movie of his career, one that deftly cuts not only between the stories of these wildly different young men, but also between past and present within those stories.

[Mysterious Skin] is a helter-skelter ride of the soul, an unblinking, white-knuckle crash landing into the mushy mysteries of the subconscious... Not for the fainthearted, the squeamish or the inflexibly decent... [Araki's] unblinking conviction makes this movie, at least by its own standards, a disturbing triumph.

The film has a weird buoyancy -- it's not a light picture, and it does include a harrowing (adult) rape scene. And it doesn't diminish the suffering of either of its two lead characters. But Araki doesn't make "Mysterious Skin" about suffering; it's really a picture about getting on with things, about the freeing benefits of coming to terms with the past instead of being a slave to it.

At once the most harrowing and, strangely, the most touching film I have seen about child abuse. It is unflinching in its tough realism; although there is no graphic sex on the screen, what is suggested, and the violence sometimes surrounding it, is painful and unsentimental.

Whatever his relationship to the events that unfold here, this is clearly a deeply felt and personal movie for Araki, to whom Gordon-Levitt bears a more than passing resemblance.
