It’s more than just Varda’s last movie; it’s the last scene of her last act, the capper to a twenty-year span of work that includes some of her most original and significant films.

The history of art is filled with late pleasures that coincidentally seem to comment on the death of the artist who made it. But once in a while you encounter a piece that seems like a premeditated farewell—a conscious summing-up of the life and work—whether or not it was intended that way. "Varda by Agnès" is that kind of movie.

In the same way that Jacquot de Nantes accompanies Jacques Demy as he passes, Varda by Agnès, in an ingenious sleight of hand, moves us to witness a poignant act of emotional generosity.

Varda’s discussion of her philosophy and her methods — the why and the how of her movies — is incisive and instructive. She helps you think about her art, which in turn helps you think about everything else.

It’s intensely moving to see Varda employ a style of cinematic eulogy that we’ve witnessed before, but this time in the form of an elegy for herself and her body of work. In Varda’s hands, however, the film feels less like a tribute to a dead filmmaker than a last conversation.

For Varda’s most fanatical fans and newcomers alike, the doc stirs excitement about her body of work and seems to send a lucid, smiley breeze through the act of living.

There’s little material here that the aficionado won’t already be familiar with from the growing body of literature and cinematic tributes devoted to Varda. . . . All the same, there’s great pleasure to be taken in hearing familiar anecdotes and insights straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth.

Prepared during her final years of life and produced by her daughter Rosalie Varda, it’s a poignant and revealing account of what mattered to her in her work. It showed Varda’s wry, playful humor and her commitment to treating social issues in intimate human terms. It’s a body of cinema that grows ever more important each year.

It is impossible not to warm to Varda’s genial humility, even if the motivations for making her new film seem mostly self-promotional in nature – and indeed [Varda by Agnès] handily succeeds in instilling the viewer (me, in this case) with the desire to return to her films.
