I really, REALLY want this movie to come to DVD. I saw it on VHS and it's too much fun. It doesn't really have the full-on dread and living fear of Lovecraft, it's Brian Yuzna so it has more in common with the Stuart Gordon school of batshit crazy Lovecraft adaptations, and therefore is a good wacky experience. Also, Jeffrey Combs is a scream as Lovecraft (he has also played Poe). Best viewed with beer on hand.
5 - It would be foolish of me to disparage this film for failing to capture the essence of Lovecraft, when I'm not even sure if that's what it's going for. In my view, it's just trying to be an entertaining, campy little collection of horror shorts, and it's wearing the thematic garb of weird fiction for flavor exclusively. Under those criteria it's passable, if predictable.
