Dan Gilroy fought the art, and the art won la la. The issue with a genre bending film is that it needs to know what genre is bending. Velvet Buzzsaw (or Art Attack, the movie) is an amalgamation of ideas across several genres, unfortunately lacking the emotional resonance to be true to any of them. Gilroy’s film’s loud, abrasive, debaucherous, yet ineffective. It barks, but doesn’t bite.
