Synopsis

A young man, inching his way up from working-class traditions via a white-collar job, finds himself trapped by the frightening reality of his girlfriend’s pregnancy and is forced into marrying her and moving in with his mother-in-law due to a housing shortage in their Northern England town.

Our take

Before coming to Hollywood and making Midnight Cowboy, John Schlesinger began his feature filmmaking career with three masterpieces of a new generation of British cinema. His debut, which won Berlin’s Golden Bear, is a richly textured portrait of the social tensions between class, sex and romance.
