What Is an Auteur?

Synopsis

A 19-year-old girl prepares to become a suicide bomber in Times Square. She speaks with a nondescript American accent, and it’s impossible to pinpoint her ethnicity. We never learn why she made her decision—she has made it already.

Our take

Tactile, ambiguous, and alive to the ideological dangers of modernity, Julia Loktev’s Day Night Day Night immerses one entirely into the perspective of an insurgent on the precipice of attacking Time Square. A rare sense of immediacy tempers this film’s risky yet unforgettable moral challenge.

Loktev deliberately provides no details regarding the organization’s political or national agenda (though everyone speaks unaccented English), but none of that really matters. The question she’s asking is simpler: Can the world register on a mind that’s been systematically stripped of everything except a sense of angry purpose?

Terror is existential in this highly intelligent, somewhat sadistic, totally fascinating movie… Were it not for it’s durational aspect, Loktev’s concept might also have been realized as a performance piece or a gallery installation.
