Deck-chair attendant Jim, who lives in the boring fictional small town of Gormleigh-on-Sea, has a brain-wave–he persuades the Mayor to host a film festival and imports a French movie siren so that the Gormleigh Holiday Resort can gain some much needed tourist interest.

Our take

Ken Russell, an iconoclast of British cinema, concocted this satirical look at celebrity culture amidst a seaside town’s desperate attempt at a film festival. Arriving 5 years after the start of the French New Wave, this anarchic comedy provides Britain’s answer to the nouvelle vague’s equation.
