Synopsis

In Northern France, a young man is obsessed with the idea of making himself explode in public. He’s not suicidal. He’s not driven by ideology. He’s just interested in the effect on people.

Our take

The renowned multi-hyphenate artist Dennis Cooper teamed with visual artist Zac Farley on this metaphysical French youth film. Partly indebted to Robert Bresson’s The Devil, Probably, the darkly evocative Permanent Green light unravels the phenomenon of teen suicide in daring new directions.

Like his French influences, Cooper’s apparent apolitical leanings and the ingenuousness of his literary work — in interviews, he has repeatedly likened himself to a teenager — amount to something powerfully political.
