From France with love

Victoria is a thirty-something divorced lawyer who’s struggling to raise her two daughters. She is canny and cynical but on the verge of an emotional breakdown. At a friend’s wedding she reconnects with Vincent, an old friend, and Sam, an old client. Her life is about to take a new turn.

Our take

While the American tradition of the romantic comedy has waned in recent years, Justine Triet’s portrait of a woman at a crossroads in the courtroom and bedroom proves the beloved genre is alive and well in France. A feminist revision of the rom-com—proving the familiar can still be unpredictable.

  • Ana Sousa's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

French films seem to have that unique capacity that no other films have: they are real. Not only they're real; they make me feel real. Like the story could actually be about me. Real people, real dialogues, no poetic bullshit, just simple as simple sentences are. That's why they fuck with our emotions so much. (and thank you for letting me dance to "The Look" in the theater)

Heureusement.

  • Daniel Spiegel's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

This is surprisingly poignant and well constructed. There are many parts in the film which compress time and skip over aspects of reality, but the film focuses on some very relatable aspects of people and coping with modern life. Not too heavy, not too light, just right.

  • Superfrog's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

A very french film, with really convincing rythm and an over the top frenchness to characters. The end is naff, but the whole enjoyable. The main character is damn sexy without being unaturally fit, the pivotal one also full of charm without being the male. I enjoy their take on society much more than the compartmentalised Anglo saxon ton coms. "Mysogyny is considering women as victims by default"

  • LibertyCapz's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

Oh what a treat this was! Victoria shows us some of the more "human" side of the strong and sophisticated modern woman. She's really ambitious, successful and good at what she does, but at the same time she definitely has her faults. The film looks great and has a phenomenal soundtrack. I highly recommend this film.

  • Loz Loory's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

Some hilarious scenes here: the bedfellow declaiming about his extra-sensitivity to women's feelings, as she has a panic attack; the "Handsome Paris Intellectual" having an existential crisis; the defendant worrying that he seems bland at the trial; the ex-husband arguing that he has an imagination... Excellent job of showing how everyone operates on their own wavelength and within their own narrow depth of field.

  • McOpinionated's rating of the film In Bed with Victoria

Lovely to see a universal film that in its style and mannerisms is local. Oh you French! :-) Anyway, this was really most fun not just because the Frenchness unsettles this anglophone film-watcher, so used to American film... but also the complex female lead is so modern in her degendered (and rather de-sexed) life. Or perhaps, it's a gender-swap film - basically she's a man... in so many ways. Good fun.

I was a little bit skeptical about this film at first, since it is French, but I'm glad I kept watching it. There's something that this film has that American films don't, and I can't seem to figure it out. Something about this film was raw, real, and so out there. I do recommend this film to anyone who is into romance and law, as it has a romantic plot and a crazy case to go along with it. Nice film, 5 stars from me
