Camilo Restrepo: A Musical Diptych

MUBI Special

We’re proud to present back-to-back the two most recent works by critically acclaimed Colombia-born, France-based artist filmmaker Camilo Restrepo. A striking diptych exploring identity, colonialism and death through the power of music and the materiality of (16mm) film.

La Bouche

Camilo Restrepo France, 2017

We follow Cilaos with its spiritual sequel. Premiering at this year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, La Bouche continues Restrepo’s exploration of identity and heritage. Inhabited by ghosts of a colonial past, this is a bewitching, rabid chant for justice—a film about death that is full of life.

Cilaos

Camilo Restrepo France, 2016

After launching Restrepo’s Impression of a War this summer, we’re now delighted to present his superb, micro-scaled musical diptych. The A-side is Cilaos, a film shot to look like a 1970s blaxploitation, and founded in the religious and cultural practices of the French island of Réunion. Stunning.
