Satoshi Kon, Anime Maestro

MUBI Special

It’s time for Japanese Anime! We’re thrilled to devote a double feature to one of the greatest animators of cinema, the late Satoshi Kon. We present two of his masterpieces, two sublime and endlessly influential triumphs of storytelling.

Satoshi Kon Japan, 2006

If Three Godfathers, the first film in our Satoshi Kon double bill, was an unusually straightforward departure for this Japanese animation master, his last feature is emblematic of his signature genius: a mind-melding, reality-bending exploration of the storytelling possibilities of animated films.

Tokyo Godfathers

Satoshi Kon Japan, 2003

Satoshi Kon is one of the great animators of cinema but, after only four movies, died at the too young age of 46. We devote this week’s double feature to him, beginning with this quasi-remake of John Ford’s heartfelt classic 3 Godfathers, showcasing a tender and touchingly human side to Kon’s craft.

Life is too short for bad films

Every day we hand-pick a beautiful new film and you have a whole month to watch it, so there’s always 30 perfectly curated films to discover.
