The minimalist approach Babluani took with the production of this story really works to its advantage. It does a fantastic job at building tension, to a point where it even toys with the audience at points.
a hard-as-nails modern noir classic. as the tension inexorably ratchets up and the stakes become (literally) deadlier, the film becomes almost unbearable to watch, yet you can't tear your eyes away from it.
Pseudo-Camus allegory of oligarchs driving the economic underclass and immigrants to kill each other. Lots of real world parallels: drugs pushed in to flood black neighborhoods in America, drive-by shootings and ODs do the work of the Klan and strikebreakers, poor kids sent to kill muslims for oil. But this movie got lost in Tarantinoland. All style, all head (though not much of either), and no heart, not even black.
"If I don't suit you, I can leave." "You can't leave now." "What if it doesn't suit me?" "You have to play now." | "13 first draws viewers in with a convoluted layering of enigmas ... [then] keeps its grip on the audience with some tautly handled scenes of human desperation and depravity. Son of director Temur Babluani, Gela has debuted with an impressively noirish moral fable." - Anton Bitel, EyeforFilm
As bennievermeer says, don't watch the trailer. You're either in or you're out. You can compare this to 'Hostel', but I prefer this one. 'Hostel' inevitably has the stink of Hollywood on it. You end up feeling a bit dirty in the way you've been manipulated. This one treats you as an adult and lets you decide how you feel.
One of my all-time favourites. I thoroughly enjoyed the film from beginning to end. The tension Babluani created grabbed me just fine. I was disappointed when he announced a US remake. It's not doing the film any justice.
