NYPD detective Mark McPherson is investigating the murder of a successful advertising executive, Laura Hunt, killed by a shotgun blast to the face just in the doorway of her apartment. He first interviews newspaper columnist Waldo Lydecker, who met Laura and became her platonic friend and mentor.
