SUNDAYS

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa Spain, 2025
Sundays is not a feel-good film, but instead a very provocative one... This is a movie of profound emotional and moral complexity... extremely mature and universal filmmaking.

While much of the film unfolds through conventional camerawork and the humorous realism of family tussles, misbehaving kids and the embarrassment of teenage hormones, the story always comes back to a deeper dimension. This is evident in the inspired choice of Blanca Soroa in the leading role. She has the calm, pensive face of a teenage Madonna and a soulful depth to match.

The film’s particular intelligence lies in the way that it obliquely illuminates Ainara’s personality, thoughts and emotions, while more directly depicting the effects that her declared vocation has on those around her... Capably steered by Ruiz de Azúa’s sensitive direction, [actress Blanca Soroa] rises to the occasion with moving, perfectly modulated intensity.
