A Style of One’s Own

Encuentros returns with a new episode.

05 Nov 2026

In this episode, cinematic tradition is explored as a refuge from artistic orphanhood.

Valentina Maurel is a Costa Rican screenwriter and director. After completing her studies in Belgium, her graduation short film, Paul Is Here (2017), received First Prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation, a program dedicated to supporting emerging filmmakers and showcasing student films. Her debut feature, I Have Electric Dreams (2022), was widely acclaimed by critics and recognized in the international competition at the Locarno Film Festival, where it won awards for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The film also received recognition at the San Sebastián, Ghent, Mar del Plata, Thessaloniki, India, and Guadalajara film festivals.

With audacious honesty, Maurel has portrayed the struggles of young women grappling with untamed desire and caught in constant conflict with their parents, against the backdrop of San José’s turbulent urban life. Her second feature, Forever Your Maternal Animal (2026), recently premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, where its female cast received the Best Actress award.

The episode’s other guest is Colombian screenwriter and director Simón Mesa Soto. After winning the Palme d’Or for his short film Leidi (2014), all of his films have been presented at the Cannes Film Festival. His debut feature, Amparo (2021), received the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award at Critics’ Week; and in 2025, his second feature, the comedy A Poet, won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section.

Soto’s cinema, which initially relied on austere formal and narrative structures, has more recently explored a sharp, musical and dynamic style, while continuing to engage with themes such as motherhood and fatherhood in Medellín. Following a successful theatrical run in Colombia and screenings at film festivals in San Sebastián, Toronto, Munich, and Montréal, producer Saïd Ben Saïd is preparing an English-language remake of A Poet, to be directed by American filmmaker Nathan Silver.

Valentina and Simón come together here to discuss the particular circumstances of being an artist in Latin America and the need to engage with an increasingly broad audience through their films.
