As the whirlwind of festivals in Locarno, Venice, Toronto, and New York finally winds down, we asked some of our most trusted critics what they’d made of the films on offer. Having already covered their relative cinematic merits at some length, we were more interested in hearing what else one might say about them: Which among them were the white elephants? The false prophets? The sleepers, as opposed to the snoozers (though not always)? Which were undersexed? Oversexed? Just sexed enough?
Some of the answers surprised us. Some contradicted each other. Each deepened our appreciation for the practice of criticism—and, incidentally, for the practice of democracy. Here are those ballots:

- Rafaela Bassili
- Chris Cassingham
