Synopsis

Lucien de Rubempré, an aspiring poet in 19th century France, leaves his provincial town for Paris. There, he meets another young writer, Etienne Lousteau, who introduces him to the business of journalism. Lucien soon discovers that the written word can be an instrument of both beauty and deceit.

Our take

Winner of 7 César awards including Best Film, Xavier Giannoli’s lush adaptation of Balzac’s masterpiece smolders with the sins and pleasures of 19th-century Paris. Led by a dazzling Benjamin Voisin, this lavish parable of literary fame and moral decay elegantly mirrors our own era of misinformation.
