I'M STILL HERE

Directed by Casey Affleck
United States, 2010
Documentary, Musical
  • 107107 minutes

Synopsis

What happened to Joaquin Phoenix? How did the seemingly shy, intense actor go from young heartthrob to Oscar nominee to punchline to pop culture mystery? Was it a breakdown? A retreat? A hoax? Fellow actor Casey Affleck gets close enough for an accurate look at what was really happening.

Our take

Is there a more unpredictable leading man today than Joaquin Phoenix? No film so purely captures his style than this stunt pseudo-documentary directed by Casey Affleck. A brilliantly funny portrait of a very public meltdown, I’m Still Here is a larkish critique of the modern cult of celebrity.
