a rock among horny men. i am provoked when she does not give what is wanted from her. and throughout the film, i crave something tender and tragic. i wanted to know of her desires. how they were bred and buttered. her mind was an infinite body of water pulled through a narrow pipe and into a modest swamp. the evolution of how an open palm became a gripping fist.
There are a fair number of similarities between this film and 'La Femme Publique'. Kaprisky is not at the same level as Binoche, but they both know how to play that objet du désir. On the face of it 'La Femme' seems more chaotic, but there are plenty of strange elements in this one to keep you guessing. Is Quentin Jesus? What makes this film better is Binoche's ability to go deep.
"Everyone's so mysterious." The underlying thematic: horrendous force, force of mise en scene, force of the body and of gender, and the tragic and dazzling acceptance of force. RENDEZ-VOUS is one of the great 80s films and at least as stunning as MAUVAIS SANG. "You can never save anybody."
A film that Black Swan, its hep cartoon double desperately tried to be. If someone had told me the story beforehand, I probably would have avoided seeing it and it is a measure of its assured and bizarre force that it can handle such a crazy story with incredible literary (Cathy between Heathcliff and Linton) and cinematic resonances (all the making of a performer films) with such odd power & such strange humanism
