What’s so sensitively shown here is how family dynamics must be remapped... The directness and honesty of the storytelling is really affecting in places; and Loholt is so natural and touching as Emma.

The script fails to reckon with the magnitude of transitioning, which is partly justified by the creative decision to tell the story through Emma's unreliable eyes, yet the writing increasingly jars as characters fail to develop and emotional stakes don't land.

Perhaps the script tries too hard to slyly signal what’s ahead, with lines about winning isn’t everything and the importance of getting to know someone before passing judgment, but mostly the efficient dialogue aims for a straightforward approach.

This solid domestic drama might not approach its themes in a particularly adventurous way – it lacks the formal playfulness of something like 52 Tuesdays or the visual flare of All About My Mother – but it does bring real emotional credibility to the story.
