LA DESCENTE

Neil Marshall Royaume-Uni, 2005
The New York Times
The film has neither the aesthetic grandeur nor the mythic resonance of “Alien,” which stays in your body long after the goose bumps have retreated. But its B-movie minimalism is fairly irresistible, as are those swarming monsters that, designed to the director’s specifications, look like a cross between Iggy Pop and a bat. If that’s not a recommendation, I don’t know what is.

“The Descent” doesn’t waste much time on obligatory schematic elements. It just takes the plunge — damn the character development, full speed into the void.

It’s got its silly moments, and there are sometimes more plot-holes than pot-holes, but writer-director Neil Marshall carries it off with a punky flair and keeps the yeecch factor cranked up high.

What unfolds plays like Aliens meets Deliverance, with the action bloody, brutal and relentless. Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall grabs the audience by the throat and just won't let go.

Thanks to its skilful director, well-cast actors and talented technical team, this fiercely entertaining British horror movie has blood, guts and brains.

Much of The Descent’s success is due to the beautiful economy of the concept: six girls, one cave and a whole lotta pain. The subterranean setting is conducive to horror and Marshall grinds every last wince out of it.
