Structured episodically, Rendezvous in Paris is Rohmer’s homage to the French capital and to the role of coincidence in everyday life. Moving gently across the city’s cafes, parks, and back streets, each of the three stories establishes a romantic tie with the urban space around it. Masterful.
Rohmer’s debut feature lucidly conjures Parisian ’50s bohemia, uncovering the trials that buffet an artist in the face of an often-cruel world. Produced by Chabrol (and with a cheeky cameo from Godard!), this New Wave drama may not have been a commercial success yet it won the hearts of cinephiles.
We love Rohmer’s signature dissections of human relationships in the modern world. But he was also drawn to the past too. His swansong is a deliciously light tale of longing and cross-dressing in the 17th century. One of the most erudite of the French New Wave at his most playful and sensual!
