Director Day-Lewis eschews kitchen-sink mundanity. While he may OD on drone shots that make tree tops look like broccoli, he’s definitely one to watch... [Anemone is] a powerful story about father and sons, told by a father and son. At once a showcase for a monumental talent, and the arrival of an exciting new one.

Playing estranged brothers, [Day-Lewis and Bean's] performances are riveting in a film that’s also bold, challenging and puzzling... There’s no denying the magic on screen when these performers come together.

Moody and occasionally inviting... [Anemone] is filled with powerful ideas about the many ways that violence—of the body, of the state and of the soul—manifests in men, and the generational ripple effects therein, even if it doesn’t cohere enough to be consistently engaging.

There’s reason to celebrate that Daniel Day-Lewis has chosen, at least temporarily, to cancel his retirement, but “Anemone” as a whole strains for a greatness that its star effortlessly conveys.

There is, of course, enormous pleasure in watching Daniel Day-Lewis... The problem is that as “Anemone” continues, the strength of the actor’s performance lays bare the banality of the writing, and Ray’s grip on your imagination loosens even as Day-Lewis’s remains fixed.

A strikingly self-confident and gravely realized first feature... Day-Lewis once again commands the screen in a combustible performance that contains traces of his most malignant creations... Ronan Day-Lewis, like his father, is able to grip our attention even when not much is happening, at least on the surface.

[An] arresting and remarkable directorial debut... [Anemone] is a dazzling introduction to a new cinematic voice: moody, visually striking, patient, and simmering with overburdened emotional tension.

Unnecessary mystical elements of Anemone... unsettle this lyrical interpersonal drama. However, they do not quite capsize it, even if their seeming intention to rewrite Ray as some primordial fallen hero seems superfluous. But when Day-Lewis and Bean are allowed to be real brothers in arms, Anemone truly blooms.

There’s an unofficial genre known as “slow cinema” that asks viewers to shift their moviegoing metabolism all the way down... [Anemone] is not that. This is a young filmmaker who so wants to make every shot freighted with import that he ends up robbing his film of importance.

While it wades in its mysteries and mythologies a bit too long, Anemone ends up being a poignant, promising project about the stains of war on the soul... It’s a cross-generational warning about lost spirits and the waywardness within passed on in families.

The humanity of “Anemone” is on full display in any context... It’s an impressive acting showcase for everyone involved, not just the actor whose appearance warrants headlines all by itself.

Though [Anemone's] daring gestures don’t always pay off, it’s a tale of internal and external brutality, of fathers, sons and clans scarred by violence, that serves as a sturdy showcase for its exceptional star.
