HONG KONG TRILOGY: PRESCHOOLED PREOCCUPIED PREPOSTEROUS

Christopher Doyle RAS di Hong Kong, 2015
Doyle has described the effort as "a film about Hong Kong and Hong Kong people, not a breaking news report."Hong Kong Trilogy has its flaws. It often feels excessively light and gets so wrapped-up in this broad idea of Hong Kong identity that it never specifically conveys it. All in all, though, Hong Kong Trilogy paints a poignant and unique portrait of the people and stories of Hong Kong, succeeding more in a limited range than as an all-encompassing ode to the city.

The main problem with "Hong Kong Trilogy" is that it over-promises and under-delivers. [...It] might sound like a project of mammoth ambition, but the opposite is true: Perhaps recognizing the absurdity of reducing an entire city to a representative sample, Doyle goes too far in the other direction by focusing on the undramatic and inconsequential.

This experimental nonfiction film—one can't really call it a documentary, for various reasons—is easily Doyle's finest work as an auteur, probably because he hasn't saddled himself with the laborious task of following a narrative. Instead, Hong Kong Trilogy is an impressionistic consideration of three different contemporary populations in HK.
