Something that’s occasionally forgotten amongst the carnage and statistics of recent events is how relentless (and calculated) the decades of conflict have been on regular Palestinian lives... No Other Land, a powerful documentary... follows the friendship of Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist and West Bank native, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli investigative journalist who joins his cause.

“No Other Land” examines an unconscionable and ongoing atrocity and simply lets it play out in all its unresolved anguish. Few recent documentaries seem so committed to insisting viewers sit in their despair without any glimmer of release or catharsis... “No Other Land’s” sense of grim futility is very much the point — it’s what the strong count on in order to suppress those who oppose them. Anyone who sees this devastating film may share in that sense of hopelessness. But we can no longer say we had no idea what was going on.

Yet No Other Land is inherently hopeful. Even as the bulldozers rumble, and soldiers take the safety off around kids, and goons point cameras in Abraham’s face and threaten Facebook-fueled revenge, there’s hope that the juggernaut of oppression can be stopped.

As an act of citizen journalism, it’s a document as damning as they come, and it lands in this endless, bitterly complex struggle like an argument that refuses to be rationalized away.

Given the controversy around the situation, it's a smart approach to chronicle events with minimal fluff or interpretation, placing the audience sometimes inches away from suffering as well as a voice for the Palestinian people, unwilling to give up hope.

No Other Land brings humanity and particularity to a topic that is too often discussed in the abstract. There is little recourse to statistics here... The result is raw and powerful.

The truth doesn’t always set you free, but it can at least make one question the narrative. No Other Land does that quite well, and the result is gripping and extremely disturbing.

If anything can be described as essential viewing, it’s this stark and unflinching account of life on the ground in a contested region of the West Bank.

No Other Land exemplifies the bravery and patience of activists and journalists. The occupation started over 70 years ago, and together, this unlikely pair capture its inhumanity with humanity.

[No Other Land] is a practical example of two-state co-operation. The irony is no less tragic for being obvious. Most straightforwardly, the [filmmakers] create a stark account of destruction and displacement, passing through degrees of violence.

[A] rage- and pain-filled documentary... [No Other Land] is a sombre, sobering work.

A moving, challenging watch.
