A poor man in Detroit lives out his whole life believing he failed in his brief musical career in the 1970s. 25 years later, he finds out that he has been one of the most famous singer-songwriters ever in South Africa, after two fans set out to find what really had happened to their hero.

Of course the story is great, like a fairy tale. The editing is also fine, with nice images of Detroit, animation and great music. But this systematic way of searching for... emotion is quite tiring. Every scene is explained to us 5 times in order to dramatize every bit possible. Don't know if Sugar Man never received money for his music but you get the feeling that this film crew wants to make money out of him !
Excellent documentary about the man behind the legend of Rodriguez. Rodriguez was popular here in Australia in the 1970s and I saw Rodriguez live in 1980. He spoke at the concert about his political aspirations. Rodriguez plays here at the Byron Bay Blues Festival almost every year. In light of this, I was somewhat bemused by the search but that didn't deter my enjoyment of the documentary and the wonderful music.
My post-viewing thoughts: 1) Huge in white S. Africa, not S. Africa as a whole. 2) Daughters included but no wife or wives. 3) Why so many shots of him walking? 4) Who were the musicians who played on his recordings? 5) What's his back story? 6) Great lyrics but the music itself is kinda boring. 7) Did it really deserve the Oscar? Solid film but not moreso than the story itself.
An incredible story (really--if it was scripted it would be too much) about the power of art that has nothing to do with money, consumerism, marketing, corporations, or the cult of personality. Just music and its power to move even people its author perhaps never imagined--his fans, in turn, recognized him as a prophet. Beautiful and humbling.
Searching for Sugarman is a modern-day cinderella story about the musical prophet you've likely never heard. The form of the film is modest in much the same way as Rodriguez himself is. The story and the music speak for themselves. An inspiring film well worth a watch and a listen.
