There’s never a false moment in this portrayal of a child whose innocence has been stolen from her... [She Rides Shotgun] disarms us with its humanity and pragmatism.

She Rides Shotgun’s tremendously involving, suspenseful filmmaking solidifies it as a worthy edge-of-your-seat crime thriller... Aftersun by way of Run All Night, She Rides Shotgun is an enthralling creation with a haunting kick.

[She Rides Shotgun] takes a while to find its sea legs and peters out a bit in its big finish sequence, but sticks the landing in the final scene. The whole thing is a little uneven, but it avoids sentimentality, perhaps the biggest trap in material involving a child.

Subtract the rock & roll cool from Badlands and you’ve got something akin to She Rides Shotgun, a violent and mournful trip through the Southwest... It’s a bleak and introspective movie, interrupted by outbursts of bloody, senseless violence, made tragic by the interactions between Nathan and Polly.

[She Rides Shotgun] is excellent... It showcases two astonishing performances: one from the always reliable Taron Egerton... and another from newcomer Ana Sophia Heger... Her fear, her joy, her rage, and, finally, her anguish make She Rides Shotgun unforgettable.

The running time is arguably a bit much, but it does give us time to breathe in between set-pieces, and, more importantly, it allows for the underlying emotion to seep through some very familiar genre tropes... Though slick and suspenseful, this intelligent thriller is unafraid to address the impact of real-world violence.

Rob Yang and John Carroll Lynch are briskly effective as lawmen who may or may not have Polly's welfare front-of-mind; Egerton is ripped and terrifying as a father whose very existence seems to put his daughter in danger; and Heger is flat-out terrific as a child who proves as resourceful and canny as she is vulnerable.

Rowland ratchets up the suspense with cunning and confidence, advancing the narrative and introducing secondary characters with suitable swiftness and meticulous precision that never call undue attention to themselves.

The well-trafficked road to perdition can be rather bumpy at times, and it’s prone to long detours where a straight line would have been more effective. [Yet] it’s easy to forgive the occasional pothole or wrong turn when you care this much about the man behind the wheel — and, of course, about the little girl sitting in the passenger seat beside him.

On one hand, She Rides Shotgun is a New Mexico-set crime drama that makes Breaking Bad look like family entertainment. On the other hand, it’s an ultimately touching portrait of the growing bond between a criminal father and the young daughter he’s barely gotten a chance to know.

[She Rides Shotgun suggests] a tactful fusion: a serious thriller that earns its action through excellent performances and thoughtful writing... There’s a confidence to “She Rides Shotgun” that many other movies can’t match, as though the filmmakers always knew exactly where to put their camera and how long to let it roll.

She Rides Shotgun ultimately succeeds by not overplaying its hand... Harper’s source material is a hard-boiled tour de force, and while Rowland’s adaptation adjusts and simplifies the novel on which it’s based, it successfully bottles the energy and unleashes it onscreen.
