LE DONNE AL BALCONE

Noémie Merlant Francia, 2024
[The Balconettes] is a soaringly outrageous murder-farce which at points had my jaw hanging so low I resembled a boa constrictor trying to swallow a goat.

The components are there: a strong ensemble, mostly sturdy camerawork, and an intriguing premise. But the parts rarely add up to a satisfying whole, and so the potential of "The Balconettes" is left annoyingly hanging in the air.

A gimmicky supernatural element somewhat undermines the more serious message, and there’s a sense that the film could have perhaps been kept to a tight 90 minutes, as it runs out of steam in the back half.

The film’s maximalism means it can afford to miss here and there without breaking its swaggering stride. The same goes for its scattershot comedy... Still, “The Balconettes” is most effective when it breathes, pauses and takes things seriously for a moment.

Merlant obviously knows she’s taking risks with a free-form, genre-bending structure, and that’s cool. It’s just a shame that the end product is so loosey-goosey it’s less a bold sui generis experiment than a hot mess.

[The Balconettes] is relentlessly silly, self-indulgent and self-admiring with a certain tiring kind of performer narcissism, always tending towards a jangling tone of celebratory affirmation which can’t absorb or do justice to the themes of misogyny and sexual violence that this film winds up being about.

[The Balconettes] is an Almodóvar-florid sex farce, as you might glean from its manic energy and sweltering pastel colors, but it’s also 100 different things on top of that... [The film] never runs out of surprises or lets convention get in the way of following its own bliss.
