Juliane and Herzog are so stiff it's almost impossible to care. Besides that, it's an intriguing film about the almost death of Herzog. What a shame it didn't go deep enough on the psychological mess the crash must have caused. A ok doc to spend an hour with, but if the director have gone far inside Juliane as he did inside the jungle, we - the viewers - would have been taken somewhere else.
Although the story of survival is very interesting to explore, and you cannot be but impressed by Juliane, I was a bit disappointed by this Herzog documentary. I think it's mainly due to this distance that the main character keeps towards her experience, and that she inevitably creates with the viewers.
NB: If you plan on traveling to Peru or South America, I have an advice for you: stay away from this movie ;)
Where "TV movie" is often a slight when talking about other directors, with Herzog, it is the vehicle for some of his most fascinating work. There is a palpably eerie pall hanging over Wings of Hope and Juliane Koepcke's strangely matter-of-fact recounting of her ordeal makes it all the more haunting. A further example of how Herzog's oeuvre richly propagates itself.
