This list covers the entire realm of animated films, from 2D to 3D and everything in between. French, Japanese, British and American films are all featured, showing that the art of animation is a universal language. Bringing life to inanimate objects and then filming the results has brought me some of my all-time favourite films, and I believe that animation can give stories that are even better, more richly presented, and compelling than live action. I have particular affection for the work of Japanese master animator Hayao Miyazaki, whose films take up several spots on my list. He is not only my personal favourite figure in animation history, but, in my opinion, the best filmmaker to emerge in the last three decades. At the opposite end of that veteran artist are the directors like Brad Bird, who has brought emotional resonance and intelligent humour to his three projects so far, all of which feature on my list somewhere. And, hey, Wes Anderson’s best film–Fantastic Mr. Fox–also makes a triumphant appearance, showing you don’t have to be an established animator to produce great work in this sphere. if only more directors of so-called mature films would consider animation for their creative expression. The order of the list is just a gut reaction.
