Set in early 20th century Sicily, Salvatore, an impoverished farmer and widower, decides to emigrate to the US with his family. He meets Lucy, a British lady, who for unknown reasons wants to marry before arriving in America. Once in Ellis Island, their destinies are in the hands of the officers.
