Linda Lin Dai plays the eponymous role of the mystic snake spirit Bai Suzhen who visits earth in the body of a woman and falls in love with the chemist Xu Xian. The two marry but their happiness is short-lived: influenced by village gossip and malicious priests, Xu Xian threatens to leave her.
