Frank Chambers, a young drifter, is hired by Nick Smith, the owner of a roadside cafe. He falls in love with Nick’s wife, Cora. They soon become lovers. Cora persuades Frank to kill her husband. After a first attempt, the couple succeed. Frank is arrested for murder.
