Rewatching this in 2016. After 10 years, after Brexit...this could be more real than ever. Brilliant dystopian cinematography. Y tu mamá también and Children of Men: TOP Cuaron films.
Cuarón has a really fresh take on action. This film delivers gold in its non-stop scenes - but the final part is kind of brilliant: it takes you inside the war. I wish the ending was less cliche - it would carry the story with me in a haunting way: like this, it makes Children of Men look like another action thriller - and it is not just that. Great, great direction.
The jaw-dropping, one-take action scenes are utterly flawless. Yet, however thrilling these scenes are, I can't really defend this film on literary grounds, as the drama therein is either underdeveloped or obvious and cliched. Due to its 76-million dollar budget, it had to pander to the mainstream, not just the art-house, hindering the substance. Still most action films only wish they had these gripping of scenes.
Cuarón's contribution to the dystopian canon. A good one, that will be revisited many years from now. We do need, more than ever these social and political cautionary tales. Maybe we will allways need them. And it's always better to take the lessons in times of peace than to live in times of scarcity, when books (like the ones that produce these stories) are considered too dangerous to be allowed.
This is how special effects should be used in this kind of films, sparingly and only applied to details. Cuarón's technical dominance over the pacing and the narrative of the movie is brilliant, it skews over time some of the more thoughtful aspects shown in the first half but I was more than thrilled with the action sequences.
Well balanced doses of action-packed scenes and drama. Really engaging storyline and nice rhythm, beautiful cinematography with a subtle use of sci-fi elements. It never gets boring or predictable and there are some very emotional moments, specially during the final act. Very good movie indeed!
