Five Inspirations is a series in which we ask directors to share five things that shaped and informed their film. Alexandre Koberidze's What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? is showing exclusively on MUBI in many countries starting January 7, 2022 in the series The New Auteurs.
INSPIRATION #1
“Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” by Sinead O'Connor
Listening and watching Sinéad O'Connor singing” Don't Cry for Me Argentina” is one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had. While writing the script, while preparing the film, I was often watching it. I think a wish to make a film as gentle, careful, and at the same time as overwhelming as this performance will follow me for many years.
INSPIRATION #2
A scene Three Days of Hot Summer (1981)by Merab Kokochashvili
The character played by Kakhi Kavsadze is an archeologist. Late at night during a heavy rainstorm he wants to go to his worksite because it might be raining there too and he wants to cover it up.
"You're crazy," his wife says, and goes back to sleep.
In the next scene, Kakhi Kavsadzes’s character leaves his place and finds his dog waiting for him in the open elevator (how did the dog leave the flat? how did he open the elevator door?).
"Where are you going, can't you see it's raining?" asks Kakhi Kavsadzes’s character to the dog. The dog gives no answer.
"You're crazy," Kakhi Kavsadze's character says to the dog, and enters the elevator.
INSPIRATION #3
Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972) by Kenji Misumi
When I was editing my last film, I watched the movie Lone Wolf and Cub. Watching a man do something impossible is very impressive. That experience comes to a head in this wonderful film.
INSPIRATION #4
The last sequence and image of The Sword of Doom (1966) by Kihachi Okamoto
An impossible action is an issue here too. I won't add any pictures so that anyone interested can discover the wonderful film and unforgettable last sequence without any hints.
INSPIRATION #5
Painting by Georgian football player Mikheil Meskhi
Apparently, there was an exhibition where different people were asked to paint "love." Here is a picture by legendary football player Mikheil Meskhi:
