Japanese chirashi for La chimera (Alice Rohrwacher, Italy, 2023). Designer unknown.
Totting up the most-liked posters on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram over the first six months of 2025, the surprise winner, with over 4,000 likes on one day, was a Japanese chirashi for Alice Rohrwacher's La chimera (2023). I put its popularity down to the Josh O’Connor fan base, or for the film itself, though it is a lovely, colorful design. The second and third places, with over a couple thousand likes each, went to two designs that I posted in tribute to David Lynch upon his passing in January: the original poster for Eraserhead (1977) and a beautiful Japanese poster for The Straight Story (1999).
There are actually three Japanese posters in the top four, number three being a zippy design for Charade (1963), which I posted in April in celebration of what would have been its director Stanley Donen’s 101st birthday. And the one-sheet for Heat (1995), also posted in April, marked the passing of Val Kilmer. Rumor has it that Kilmer accepted a lower-than-usual salary for his role in that film, but in return asked for face time on the poster, in between Pacino and De Niro.
The rest of the top 20 is a wonderfully eclectic mix. Some of the rarest are a stunning Cuban Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), an eccentric UK quad for Belle de Jour (1967), and a cheeky design by the great Seymour Chwast for a 1970 anthology of short films entitled Art or Pornography. There are recent art posters: by the Polish designer known as Plakiat for The Brutalist (2024), by Belgian illustrator Laurent Durieux for The Graduate (1967), and by Swedish artist Sebastian Larsmo for Band of Outsiders (1964). And there’s also a beautiful illustrated poster by Desi Moore for the US release of Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths (2024).
I’m always a little shamefaced to include posters I've had a hand in, but one is the newest poster by the great Vasilis Marmatakis for the 4K rerelease of Dogtooth (2009) (I was merely an advisor) and the other is my revival poster for Killer of Sheep (1978), whose popularity I put down to the greatness of Charles Burnett’s film.
So here, in gently descending order, are the top twenty most popular posters of the past six months on Movie Poster of the Day. Feast your eyes, and please like and subscribe, as they say.
