Trailer for Manoel de Oliveira's "Gebo and the Shadow"

Premiering in Venice, Oliveira's new film stars Michael Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale, Jeanne Moreau and many Oliveira regulars.

Playing out of competition at this year's Venice Film Festival is the 103 year old Manoel de Oliveira's O gebo e a sombra (Gebo and the Shadow), starring many Oliveira regulars as well as Michael Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale and Jeanne Moreau. Here's a synopsis from the producer:

Despite his age and general weariness, Gebo keeps on working as an accountant to provide for his family. He lives with his wife, Doroteia, and his daughter-in-law, Sofia, but it is the absence of João, son and husband, that worries them.Gebo seems to be hiding something, especially to Doroteia, who is anxiously waiting to see her son again. Sofia is also waiting for her husband to come home, and yet she fears him. All of a sudden, João arrives and everything changes.

Look at that colour palette!
I’m surprised it didn’t screen at AFI’s European Union Film Showcase this year. The Portuguese Embassy in Washington DC had previously hosted a very impressive in-person screening by Manoel de Oliveira of CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS—THE ENIGMA within the same context a few years ago.
