DELICATESSEN

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro França, 1991
The sets, special effects, photography, pace and performances all contribute to the brash comic-strip vivacity, and even the fairytale romance avoids sentimentality. Increasingly inventive as it progresses, Jeunet and Caro's fast, funny feature debut entertains from sinister start to frantic finish.

The first half of Delicatessen is charming, witty and poignant... Unfortunately, [the film's] charm begins to wear thin around the hour mark. It’s perfectly fine until the end, but considering how unassuming and endearing the first half is, the final scenes simply don’t appear nearly as ambitious or passionately put together.

Jeunet attempts the same awkward kinkiness that made his Amelie redeemably cute... But Delicatessen... also overdoses on its cartoonishly oppressive surroundings all too repetitive of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and far less meaningful. Jeunet and Caro stuff themselves with all their favorite obsessions and the result is both unfunny and very unappetizing.

A hugely enjoyable film, "Delicatessen" welds comedy and magic into a bizarre, grotesque fantasy of an oddball dystopian future. The directors are constantly playing curveball with the audience's expectations and nothing can prepare you for the sheer weirdness of it all.

Each camera shot [is] a carefully composed masterpiece that immerses the viewer in a realm of luxuriant imagination. Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's film leaves you overwhelmed and breathless.

A nightmare comedy with a childlike center of gravity... ”Delicatessen” is a fearsomely intense movie that mixes moods with formidable assurance... [and is] loaded with horrific images and macabre jolts that keep resonating eerily in your mind’s eye... [It] outshocks and outplays the American horror comedies at their own game.

"Delicatessen" does not aspire to much more than simply flinging these characters together and intercutting their exploits in a quick, stylish fashion... Shot in oppressive orangy tones and sometimes taking unexpectedly grisly turns, "Delicatessen" works best when simply allowing its characters to express their strangeness.

Delicatessen borrows from the traditions of both surrealism and black comedy. Yet the overall tone of the film is extremely unique. Jeunet and Caro have invented a new kind of gag comedy for the screen. Their imaginings may be dark and cynical, but their jokes are vigorously physical and elemental.

Beautifully textured, cleverly scripted and eerily shot (often with a wideangle lens making characters look even weirder), Delicatessan is a zany little film that’s a startling and clever debut for co-helmers Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro.

Some pale echoes here of French poetic realism (mainly Clair and Carne), Gilliam, Lynch, and the Coen brothers, but despite the singular appearance of the hero (Diva‘s Dominique Pinon), there are no characters to care about or remember afterward.
