There’s pure magnetism, too, in the rapport between Melling and Skarsgard. As partners and lovers, they’re completely believable... This dynamic also is also what makes Pillion so incredibly, insanely hot. The payoff here isn’t the sex, but the anticipation of it.

Pillion is a wonderful film that’s heavy with purpose... It also raises serious questions around the unspoken line between a consensual BDSM relationship and emotional abuse, as well as the true cost of freedom within any romantic relationship and the boundaries we set for ourselves. All that and it’s also very, very hot.

Lighton’s story is raw and enthralling and will have you seeing parts of yourself on screen that you thought no one would ever be able to see. It expertly highlights the ways in which we both lose and find ourselves in the wake of a whirlwind romantic relationship.

And there’s a genuine non-judgmental attitude taken towards a type of sexual relationship which might at first appear strange to some audiences. It neither neuters it to win our acceptance, nor serves up a trajectory which ultimately bends towards ‘normality’, whatever that is.

Led by a pair of fine-tuned performances from Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, the movie walks a fragile tonal tightrope with remarkable flair...

This tension gives Pillion a melancholy heart but also results in a film that is, chain collars and ass-eating aside, surprisingly mild at its core — or, at least, it ends up positioning dominance and submission in counterpoint to emotional intimacy in a way that echoes E.L. James more than you might expect.

Pillion examines, with great frankness, aspects of human sexuality around domination and submission... Pillion never loses a core human truth. And yes: it is often very funny.

Lighton beautifully uses kink and BDSM as a playground to explore the longing and devotion that comes from unrequited love, as well as the balance of learning to love yourself and maintaining a sense of independence. With help from Skarsgård and Melling, the film navigates the chaotic push and pull of a relationship, as each sacrifices parts of themselves for the potential of love.

Cinematographer Nick Morris has an eye for both sweaty intimacy in its hottest moments and the pooling reserves of desire and reined-in emotion that require a certain detachment. Until we are snapped back into what is ultimately a deeply moving love story, one where we become the submissives to Lighton’s strange, beautiful, and sexy vision.

It’s a beast of sexual power dynamics and unrequited intimacy all on its own. And it may make even the most liberal viewer uncomfortable in the best way possible. At least that’s what we assume writer and director Harry Lighton is going for.
